Transmission of FIV

Transmission of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) among cohabiting cats in two cat rescue shelters.
Conflicting accounts have been published in the veterinary literature regarding transmission of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) between cohabiting cats in mixed households, and the mechanics of possible casual transmission, if it occurs, are poorly understood. Similarly, there are conflicting reports of vertical transmission of FIV.

I don't know what to make of this. The rescue sites are all linking to each other and crowing that FIV is not transmissible to cats living in the same household as long as there are no bites. This would be wonderful, but it has not been proven.

It has NOT been proven.

The article reports that 138 cats in one rescue did not catch FIV from an FIV+ cat It says that 19 kittens born of FIV+ queens didn't catch it through the placenta or by nursing. This is too small of a sample to be statistically significant.

Try it again with 1000 cats.

Here's more info about FIV from Cornell University.

Koko The Gorilla Loves Kittens (and People)

Koko's New Kittens

Purr Miss Koko is a speshul Gorilla. She live in a preserve wif a nice lady named Penny who taught her sign language and how to use a special computer to communicate. Koko can understand human speech but not talk it cuz, well, gorilla moufs can't make hooman noises.

Koko and All Ball

Koko had her first kitteh back in da 1970s. She named him "ALL BALL" and it surprised efurryone dat a gorilla wanted a pet kitteh. When she first met All Ball, Koko played wif his little paws and said, "Cat do scratch. Koko love!" When All Ball got hit by a car Koko signed "sad" and "frown." Later dat night she wailed wif grief. Koko is a fine gorilla person and I lubs her.

Koko occasionally entertains celebrity guests such as Betty White and William Shatner. When Robin Williams met Koko dey hadz great fun! Koko was very sad when she learned of Robin Williams' passing. :-(

I hope you will visit Koko's web page.

From koko.org » About Us

Established in 1976 as a 501(c)(3) corporation, it is best known for "Project Koko," the longest interspecies communication study in history, and the only one involving gorillas. It has evolved into an institution that provides a unique resource for great ape conservation, care and understanding.

Animal Testing Is Not Valid

Purrr Dem Purrime Ministerettes of Planet Purrth, Shiva and Jaya, did answer questions on da bloggy "Kyra & Question Time"!

I had an answer to one of da questions. I quotes da question and da Purrime Ministerettes answer:
Q: Hullo Shiva and Jaya …maybe you can choose another question of me for question time? Why humans are testing things on animals which are never for animals – only for humans ;o)
A: Some hoomans, not all of them, are catwards. They don’t have the nerve to undergo pain themselves and believe that we anipals are unable to feel anyting, either physical or emotional. Somebody dumped us in a glass bin when we were newborn kittens. Who do some hoomans think they are? Do onto others as you would have them do to you!
Jaya, I so agree with that Jesus Cat! Yeah, has that glass bin dumper already been dumped in a glass bin?!

Here are just three ways dat animals not react da same as hoomans. Hopes you like logic cuz da lady using it to thwock da unethical methodologies.

Dogs and cats don’t get poison ivy. Da active ingredient, urushiol, is highly allergenic to most hoomans. Non-primate species can roll in poison ivy. Den rubs it on da hoomans when we snuggles. MOL!!!
Applying a product to animals' skin is not a valid test.

Many years ago da lady read in a mycology book dat in da old days when dogs was livestock, hoomans used to test wild mushrooms on demz before eating. SOMETIMES da dog was fine but the hoomans died. Other times it took 12 hours or more for the symptoms to show and everybody got sick! However, I not finds anything about it online. I did finds out dat some mushrooms are poisonous to dogs but not cats.
Trying a food on animals is not a valid test.

In 2006, Six clinical drug trial participants suffered violent reactions to TGN1412, a new immune system boosting drug. The subjects were only given the equivalent of 1/500th the safe dose for "non-human primates," monkeys. The test subjects suffered searing pain and multiple organ failure within a few hours. The drug had been tested successfully in non-human primates, macaques.
Giving a drug to animals is not a valid test.

Hope you didn't want pixchurs. Dis not a snuff porn bloggy.

Lots of drugs don't make it through the animal trials, and who knows whether the drug companies have thrown away da Magic Bullet cuz it didn't work on animals? So when da animal trials and hooman trials happen to give da same results, it kinda random.

Iz not da sharpest tool in da shed. I cantz make sense of it.

Why do they keep doing it?

Cats and Poison Ivy

I knew we kittehs don't get poison ivy!

Only humans and primates are sensitive to urushiol.

To Mohnton, PA: TNR, don't kill!

Ask the Borough of Mohnton, PA to TNR feral cats, NOT kill them!

The Borough of Mohnton, PA has decided to murder its feral cat population rather than use more humane, less expensive options.  Please click the link above to sign a petition on The Petition Site.  A nice letter helps.  No cursing them out or wishing heartsticks on them as that only makes them dig their heels in.  Remember Belfast's reaction to death threats.

This is my letter.  Be sure to mention the TNR option and prices if you want details.

I see that someone in your organization has an unreasoning fear of cats that caused him or her to push the rest of you into signing an order to trap and kill all ferals.

Rather than take advantage of public and private funds available for inexpensive Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) programs, you plan to have bungling minimum wage people kill the cats at great expense to the borough.
"No Nonsense Neutering www.nnnlv.org received a $35,000 grant for Berks County free-roaming cats. Fairchild Foundation asks for a $35 donation PER cat, which is still less expensive than the $50 that the Berks County in PA is paying to KILL ferals."

It is simply wrong for you to exterminate feral cats as if they were cockroaches, not when there are other, less expensive options available.

Please reconsider.

5out of 5

Pros: Long life with refills, Safe, Cats can't resist Da Bird, Fun, Colorful, Cat Likes It, Durable

Best Uses: Bond with your cat, Simulates hunting, Stress relief, Active Cats, Special Playtime, Older Cats, House Cats, Kittens, Great exercise

Describe Yourself: Long-time Pet Owner

Da Bird is a must-have toy for all cats. The feather attachment makes a sound like a bird that cats can't resist.
I won Da Bird from @BabyPatches during a #pawpawty in the fall of 2009. Three attachment refills later it was still as good as new. My cats are unforgiving with their toys so I'm ordering my fourth refill today.

I heart Petiethecat!

@SeattleP @GeorgeTheDuck @flicka47 Purrrr George made dis pawsum shirt for me on Twitpic
Purrrr @GeorgeTheDuck made dis pawsum shirt for me!

My dear furend Share photos on twitter with Twitpic@Petiethecat did get sick again, but da v-e-t pulled him through. Petie has diabetes and his kidneys is failing. There are great treatments for it now that can extend kittehs lives and keep us comfortable and happy. Lots of anipals are sitting on #PetiesPorch sending #HealingPaw.

Purrr... da @sisfurcats are mature pfbbt! and gets an extra level of vet care. Mature means over 10 years. Dey gets a senior workup every year which includes blood work in hopes of discovering subclinical health problems, like Chilipepper's hyperthyroidism. In dis part of da world it costs about $250. Chilipepper will be "geriatric" like my furend Petie next year so she will get extra vet visits.

Rather than continue to expound on veterinary care I'd like to share an article on the American Animal Hospital Association web page.

AAFP/AAHA Feline Life Stage Guidelines
In 2006, owners took their dogs to veterinarians more than twice as often as cats, averaging 2.3 times/year, compared with 1.1 times/year for cats, and significantly more dogs (58%) than cats (28%) were seen by a veterinarian one or more times/year. Cat owners often express a belief that cats 'do not need medical care'. Two reasons for this misconception are that signs of illness are often difficult to detect, and cats are perceived to be self-sufficient.

A Shrimpie a Day

Tell your mom that you need shrimp for heart and brain health.

Shrimp have lots of taurine and lots of Omega-3 EFAs.

Taurine is an amino acid, a necessary nutrient. Any decent brand of cat food will supplement taurine, however some of it is destroyed by heat in the canning process. Cats have lost the ability to synthesize taurine. If they don't get enough from food they can suffer from Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM), a potentially deadly heart condition.

Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids (EFA) are necessary for the healthy functioning of every system in the cat's body. EFAs are found in seafood and some plants such as flaxseed and avocados.

A shrimpie a day keeps the V-E-T away.
