Breezy Cat to Facebook Sep 3

I see. You realize, of course, that I used Facebook more than my human does? It doesn't make good business sense to delete my account. She helps me type, and she DOES click on advertisements, much to my irritation.

The problem with Catbook is that I can't comment directly on furiends walls or photos. The lady has to do it for me. It's rather degrading, especially when I want to post flirts to a female cat. It's also difficult to search Catbook for furends, it seems the lady has to friend their humans first. She really doesn't want to share her information with people she doesn't know just so I can talk to their pets.

MyCatSpace works a lot better than CatBook. There was an anipal community on Ning but it isn't working. However, none of those options works as well as Facebook. For one thing, neither of them offer English (Pirate) as a language option.

The second best option would be a fursbook site using the same content management system as Facebook. Since it isn't available I'm using Blogger and Twitter now. *They* don't discriminate on the basis of species. May Ceiling Cat have mercy on you.

Update 11/6/2010:
We haz a fursbook! Hooray!

Mr. Breeze loves his duck. on Twitpic

When I joined Twitter (@kittehboi) earlier this year I met all kinds of anipals. Many of them have duckies. Some of them, like my furiend @GeorgetheDuck, are duckies!

Back in August somebody told me about The Duckie Club, where there is a video of anipals and their duckies. It sounded like great fun, but my ducky didn't have a name yet!

Today I finally thought of a name for my ducky. His name is Sir Francis Duck, @SirFrancisDuck on Twitter.

Best of all, @BorisKitty and @ShawneeShep got me set up in @Manxington's #DuckyClub. I am so proud to be a member.

Look for me at 4:15 / 5:03 in The Duckie Club Movie Volume VIII.

These are more recent videos. I lovez my ducky.

@SirFrancisDuck asked me to tell you that he is a Hartz Nature'S Collection Bird and is a dog toy. Da neighbor's dog has the same duck and carries him everywhere.

The lady brought one of the boxes with doors up from the basement. I feel vaguely uneasy about this.

Hmmm, the box is open in the middle of the living room floor. I'd better investigate.

Animals and Human Intelligence

Previously I wrote about "The Others: How Animals Made Us Human" by Dr. Paul Shepard. Dr. Shepard wrote a number of books, and maybe I'll review them all. MOL!

In "Thinking Animals: Animals and the Development of Human Intelligence," Dr. Shepard briefly discusses the neurotransmitters. Prey animals are hypervigilant, always watching and waiting for some unknown something to startle them into flight. Predators' neurochemistry, however, mandates focus: moving slowly, with patience and determination, toward the object of their attention. What kind of animal can display both kinds of attention? It must require a wild mood swing to instantly change a creeping hunter into someone who is running at top speed from a predator. It is a huge shift from one neurochemical pathway to a completely different pathway, releasing a neurotransmitter and simultaneously inhibiting another. The ability to switch contexts was an important factor in human evolution. It totally explains their mood swings and inconsistant behavior.

No matter how much our humans have evolved both psychologically and culturally, the old systems are still wired in and still affect then. Humanity is not a separate act of creation.

"Except possibly his soul, man prizes his mind above all else. His mind is a product of its ecology -- the same ecology. Nothing that evolves persists unless sustained by those same creative forces. Like a ball at the top of a fountain, the human head pivots on its animal backbone, the mind a turning knot of thought and dream on the end of a liquid spear of living animals."
-- Paul Shepard, "Thinking Animals"

How We Make our People Human

One of the lady's favorite books is Paul Shepard's eye-opener, "The Others: How Animals Made Us Human." Dr. Shepard was a Professor of Natural Philosophy and Human Ecology and wrote a number of books on the human species' complex relationships with the earth and her other inhabitants.

In "The Others," Dr. Shepard's focus is on the topic of domesticating animals. Originally humans relationship with other species was simple. Either they ate that species, or they were eaten by it. Simplistic as it sounds, that has a profound impact on the human central nervous systems, specifically the limbic system.
As an aside, domestication changed some species into status symbols, and in some cultures it is possible to determine the social status of extended family members by whether they sleep nearer or farther than the livestock.

I'm sure that the lady's protohominid ancestors were eaten by all manner of frightening creatures. Sisfurcat Bugs Bunny tells me that our distant relatives the sabre-toothed tigers Leopard canines fit punctures in hominid skull from Swartkrans used to sneak up on the lady's tiny Australopithecine ancestors, grab them by the head, and drag them home for the kittens to play with. Lower teeth puncture the back of the head, unwieldy canine teeth pierce the eyes. Physical anthropologists have found quite a few Australopithecus skulls with these puncture marks, as shown in the wonderful photo at right. This early hominid skull was found in a cave at Swarkrans in the late 1930s. It wasn't for another 30-some years that someone paused to reflect on the odd indentations in the skulls. We'll leave the question about the other skulls, the ones with scratches resembling the marks of early hominid stone tools, for another time. This pausing to reflect takes a lot of effort!

"The Others" is worth reading if only for the chapter on teddy bears as psychological bridges between the wild and the civilized. (I think we cats serve that purpose adequately.)

ASPCA Speaks Out Against Michael Vick

ASPCA Blog | Ed Sayres: The Road Ahead for Michael Vick
After careful consideration, we have decided to speak out now about Michael Vick because of the special circumstances involving the ASPCA. Several months ago, Mr. Vick's PR representatives approached the ASPCA to help educate America about the heinous act of dog fighting following his release from prison. We were the first animal welfare organization given the opportunity to work with Mr. Vick but immediately turned him down due to the unique knowledge we had of his indescribable and barbaric acts of animal cruelty where he and his associates savagely electrocuted and beat dogs to death after they lost their brutal fights.

A big thumbs up to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) for daring to speak out against Michael Vick.

On the other hand, the Humane Society is taking money from the Vick public relations machine and in return are telling the world that 18 months in prison taught him to love animals.
