New Tools: Readability

The Property of Readibilty

TL;DR: Use this Readability Analyzer to estimate the readability of a passage of text using several different metrics. Focus on the Flesh-Kincaid Grade Level test.

New Tools: Readability.

in a money-making blog, it is advisable to tailor the language to the audience. Choose a grade level and then match the lengths of words and the length of sentences to give that grade level. According to Siteimprove, there are seven major readability tests. They all use metrics of sentence and word length to determine the complexity. Some give the result as the grade level required to read it.

  • Automated Readability Index (ARI) is a readability test that works well with English and Western European languages. The test uses long words and long sentences to calculate a readability score. The score gives an indication of how difficult the page is to read. Each score can be matched to an equivalent reading ability level.
  • Coleman-Liau is a readability test designed primarily for English text. The test focuses on long words and long sentences. A score can only be calculated using this test if the content exceeds 100 words. The test produces an approximate representation of the US grade level needed to comprehend the text.
  • Flesh-Kincaid Grade Level is a readability test designed for English text. The test focuses on polysyllabic words and long sentences. A score is returned which can be related to the approximate US grade level needed to comprehend the text.
  • Flesch Kincaid Reading Ease is a readability test designed for English text. The test focuses on polysyllabic words and long sentences. It is widely used in US government as a way of ensuring that documents and forms are understandable for the "average" American. Results are measured on a scale of 0-100, where 0 is very complicated to read and 100 is very easy to read.
  • Gunning Fog is a readability test just for English texts. The test focuses on complex words (polysyllabic words) and long sentences. A score can only be calculated using this test if the content of the page is over 100 words, making it a hard test to apply to web pages.
  • LIX is a readability test that performs well on most of the Western European languages. The test focuses on total words, the number of sentences and number of long words (more than 6 characters). A score is returned which gives an indication of reading ease.
  • SMOG is a readability test just for English texts. The test focuses primarily on polysyllabic words. A score can only be calculated using this test if the content of the page has at least 30 sentences, making it a hard test to apply to all web pages. The test produces an approximate representation of the US grade level needed to comprehend the text.

My major objection to these tests is that the focus being on "readability," the results reward small words and short sentences.

The Datayze Readability Analyzer estimates the readability of a passage of text using the Flesch Reading Ease, Fog Scale Level, Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, and other metrics.

Bugs Bunny - My Bio

I was born feral in June 1999 and lived in the wild with my mama and fursibs. I'd wrassle with my fursibs, mama would feed us, we'd sleep and then we'd wrassle some more. We were learning to catch and eat insects. Sometimes mama would bring us a deer mouse to play with.

MobyPicture Glitch @mobypicture

Purrr after twitpic shut down I had to find a new image host. I switched to Mobypicture. My only complaint is that Mobypicture flattens animated gifs. Since they support videos I hope they will change this soon.

Mobypicture has a new widget for embedding your photos on your bloggy. YAY!! But it's new and there is an issue. Here's a temporary fix.

Copyright and Content Theft

Deys a great article about copyright and content theft over on BlogPaws called Malice in Wonderland. It reminded me that although da lady is very careful on her bloggy, she is a burglar on mine.

Purrrr Always assume web content is copyright protected whether you see a copyright notice or not. The notice is a gentle reminder and little more.

If you are familiar with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, this is why it stifles creativity.
Electronic Frontier Foundation: Unintended Consequences: Twelve Years under the DMCA

You can use the TinEye reverse image search to look for your photos online.

flickr allows authors to use Creative Commons copyrights. Da lady uses lots of them on her blog with proper attribution as required. Some allow derivative works. Some can even be used for commercial works. So if you upload to flickr, make sure to set the copyleft!

You can always ask! People will let you use their stuff if you promise to link back to their site.

Da lady uses a wordpress plugin called OpenCalais Tagaroo to find pictures on flickr and suggest tags from Reuters.

I'm a bad boi. Da lady should pay more attention to da laws in my bloggy. It will be very important when (not if) someone asks me to take someting down dat I do so right away.

Verifying Bloggy on Pinterest

Purrrr My furends been asking me to join Pinterest. Dis a new site da do in pixchurs what technorati and digg do wif linkys. I guess it for people who can't read?

Anyway, I added my bloggy in da Pinterest settings and it didn't know how to verify blogspot! Using da magic of redirects I convinced blogger to serve a page as da verify page. You can too, and dis how.

Clicky da pixchurs to see dem bigger.

  1. First sign into Pinterest and go to your settings page.
    https://pinterest.com/settings/
Fill in your blggy address and click da Verify Website button.
  2. Da next page tells you a file to download, so download it. Mine is pinterest-fd2f5.html.
    https://pinterest.com/domain/verify/
Leave da window open because you will come back to it later.
Pinterest says to upload dat file to your website. We can't do dis on blogger. Oh no!!!!
  3. Don't be sad! We will fool blogger. Open dat html file you downloaded in your favrit text editor, i.e. Notepad. Select all and copy to da blogger page.
  4. Now in blogger create a new page and paste all demz stuff from da html file. Make the title the same as the file name. Publish!
  5. Ok, now is da trick. View dat page you just published. Copy the URL in da browser address bar. Mine is
    http://kittehboi.blogspot.com/p/hi-mr.html
  6. Now you will go to BLOGGER settings. What you will do is tell blogger to redirect. Dis mean when somebody tries to see a page, you direct dem to another page. And dat page is how Pinterest verifies your bloggy! So go to
Blogger Dashboard » Settings » Search Preferences » Errors and Redirection » Custom Redirects » Edit.
When you fill it in, "from" is da name of da page Pinterest expects. "to" is da address of da bloggy page you just published and copied. "Save Changes."
  7. Almost done!!!
Remember dat Pinterest setting window I told you to leave open? Go back and
"Click here to complete the process"
Pinterest should give you a big friendly message.
    YAY!!!

Purrr If dis works for you, please leave a comment. If not, talk to me on twitter and if I have time I can walk you through it.
